Portree Independent is situated in Portree, capital of the Isle of Skye and the main hub for public transport. The location is shown on the map opposite - use the controls to scroll around and zoom in and out to display a larger or smaller area.

Getting here by road

The drive to Portree (there are direct buses from Glasgow and Inverness) goes past Eilean Donan Castle on the mainland, crosses the Skye Bridge and has stunning views of the Cuillin mountains and distant mainland on the approach to Portree.

Getting here by ferry

Another route to Skye is from Mallaig (accessible by train), from where you can catch a ferry across to Armadale and then a bus to Portree. Or sail down Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle and pick up the Portree bus from there.

Getting here by yacht

Portree is also a popular stop-over for the yachting community, with an excellent and beautiful sheltered harbour. Showers are available at the hostel to those not staying overnight at a charge of £2.50.

Or you could arrive by helicopter as the Queen did. Seen here (dressed in red) talking to school children in Portree's square.
